Draper hosts first MassMEDIC Women in MedTech Networking and Leadership Forum Event of 2019
CAMBRIDGE, MA—As technology continues to drive the pace of progress in biomedical devices and precision medicine, the traditional line between engineering and medical science grows ever thinner. And as medical machines and the computers that power them become smaller, faster and smarter, the medical device industry is making medical practice easier for doctors, more effective for patients and more cost-effective for the entire healthcare system.
For a sense of how these trends are manifesting themselves today, Draper will sponsor and host the MassMEDIC Women in MedTech Networking and Leadership Forum, 9 to 11 a.m., Feb. 26, at One Hampshire St., Cambridge, MA. The event will feature guest speaker Mary Anne Heino, president and chief executive officer, Lantheus Medical Imaging, Inc.
Tara Clark, vice president of commercial business at Draper, remarked, “Draper celebrates innovation in biomedical technologies and invites the community to join us. We work in interesting times, when breakthrough capabilities are setting a new pace and effectiveness for medical innovation for pharma, healthcare and medical device partners.”
Brian Johnson, president of MassMEDIC, added, “This year’s first MassMEDIC Women in MedTech Networking and Leadership Forum with Draper is the launch of a focused initiative to provide events and programs that address the critical issues and opportunities for the region’s MedTech ecosystem. The MassMEDIC Women in MedTech Forum is designed to inspire, engage, mentor and connect women at every stage of their professional career and from all areas of the New England medtech ecosystem. We are delighted to be working with Draper and all of our sponsors on this event.”
The event will provide attendees an opportunity to network with each other and engage Draper engineers regarding eight biomedical technologies—technologies that are designed to improve lives, change industries and push the boundaries of what is possible.
Anthony Coston, head of medical devices at Draper and a MassMEDIC board member, commented, “The biomedical world is shifting, and the emphasis is on an applied research and product development model that gets devices and therapies to patients, clinicians and biopharma companies sooner. Draper is uniquely positioned to enable the medical tech community to do just that.”
Draper’s showcase of biomedical technologies, each being presented by female engineers and scientists leading these projects, include the following:
-
Precision medicine – designing an end-to-end cell bioprocessing system.
-
Pediatric heart valve – an artificial heart valve that grows with young children.
-
SysteMD™ – using psychophysiological sensors to evaluate mental disorders.
-
Ultrasound technology for pregnant women in developing countries.
-
OECT biosensor – rapid biosensor-based point-of-care diagnostics.
-
DNA synthesis – synthesizing long strands of error-free DNA.
-
E-Field sensor – noncontact measuring of brain activity.
-
Pushing perception with a scalable holographic 3D display.
